There are many reasons why card schemes refuse a transaction. The corresponding authorization responses we receive are not the same for all schemes and change from time to time.
Here is an overview of general raw acquirer responses to refused and cancelled transactions that might help you to understand the problem.
LAST JOURNAL TYPE: Cancelled
RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 00: Approved or completed successfully
DESCRIPTION :The transaction was cancelled after being initially approved by the issuer. This can be due to various reasons, for example, if the shopper returns goods after purchase.
LAST JOURNAL TYPE: Refused
RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 01: Refer to the card issuer
DESCRIPTION :The transaction was refused by the card issuer. The guest should contact their bank for clarification.
LAST JOURNAL TYPE: Refused
RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 03: Invalid merchant
DESCRIPTION: The transaction was refused by the card issuer.

RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 04: Captured card/Pick-up
DESCRIPTION: The card issuer requests to retain the card. This can be due to a suspected counterfeit or stolen card. This reason is used in an E-Commerce environment although it originates from a POS (Point Of Sale) environment.
LAST JOURNAL TYPE: Refused
RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 05: Do not honor
DESCRIPTION: This is a generic refusal that has several possible causes. In most of the cases the following reasons apply:
- The issuing bank declined the transaction due to high amount and/or fraud risk
- The card holder typed the wrong CVV code.
The shopper should contact their issuing bank for clarification, e.g. call the number on their credit card and ask the bank to approve the payment.

RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 06: Error
DESCRIPTION: Payment could not be authorized and resulted in an error.

RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 07: Pick up the card, special condition
DESCRIPTION: The card issuer requests to retain the card. This can be due to a suspected counterfeit or stolen card.
LAST JOURNAL TYPE: Cancelled
RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 10: Partial approved
DESCRIPTION: The transaction was cancelled. Some card issuers support partial-approval authorization. This approves a part of the requested transaction, leaving the remainder to be paid with another form of tender.
LAST JOURNAL TYPE: Refused
RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 12: Invalid transaction
DESCRIPTION: The card issuer does not allow this type of transaction on this card/account. For example, the card is a fleet card for which this type of transaction is not permitted.

RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 13: Invalid amount
DESCRIPTION: The card issuer has declined the transaction because of an invalid format or field. This response usually occurs with Cirrus or Maestro Debit and Prepaid Cards or cards that are not allowed to do online purchases.

RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 14: Invalid card number
DESCRIPTION: The card number is not within a card number range supported by the scheme.
LAST JOURNAL TYPE: Refused
RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 1A: Additional customer authentication required
DESCRIPTION: Applies for Visa. Authentication is required for the transaction. If the transaction is in the scope of PSD2 and did not go through a 3D Secure transaction, retry with 3D Secure.
LAST JOURNAL TYPE: Refused
RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 30: Format error
DESCRIPTION: The card issuer does not recognize the transaction details being entered. This is due to a format error. The shopper should check the transaction information and retry.
LAST JOURNAL TYPE: Refused
RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 33: Expired card, Capture.
DESCRIPTION: The customer’s card issuer has declined the transaction as Card has expired or the date is incorrect. Check the expiry date in the transaction and try processing the transaction again. Sometimes, this error code will be provided if the expiry date is entered incorrectly, NOT only for expired cards.

RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 41: Lost card
DESCRIPTION: The card was reported as lost. Validate the shopper’s authenticity and refer them to their bank.

DESCRIPTION: The card was reported as stolen. Validate the shopper’s authenticity and refer them to their bank.

RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 51 or 1107: Insufficient funds/over credit limit/ Not sufficient funds
DESCRIPTION: Insufficient funds in the cardholder’s account.

DESCRIPTION: The card expiration date is in the past. The shopper should correct the date or use another payment method.

RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 55: Invalid PIN
DESCRIPTION: The shopper has entered an incorrect PIN. The shopper should re-enter their PIN or use another payment method.

RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 57: Transaction not permitted to issuer/cardholder
DESCRIPTION: The card issuer does not permit the transaction on this card/account. The shopper can use another payment method.

DESCRIPTION: The card issuer does not permit the transaction on this card/account. The shopper can use another payment method or contact their bank.

DESCRIPTION: The card issuer or Payyo suspects this payment to be fraudulent and therefore refuses.

DESCRIPTION: The shopper has exceeded their card limit.

DESCRIPTION: The card issuer has restricted where the card can be used. For example, because of embargoes.

DESCRIPTION: The card issuer indicated a security issue with this card. The shopper can use another payment method.

DESCRIPTION: The shopper has exceeded their card usage frequency limit.

DESCRIPTION: The card issuer indicated an issue with this card and requests contact from the shopper. The shopper can use another payment method.

DESCRIPTION: The shopper has entered an incorrect PIN more times than is allowed by the issuing bank.

DESCRIPTION: The transaction is from a new cardholder, and the card has not been properly unblocked.

DESCRIPTION: Zero-value auth request authorized.

DESCRIPTION: Zero-value auth request authorized.

DESCRIPTION: The issuing bank cannot be contacted. The shopper should retry or use another payment method.

RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 91: Issuer unavailable or switch inoperative
DESCRIPTION: The issuer or issuer processor cannot authorize, for example, because of downtime.
LAST JOURNAL TYPE: Refused
RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 92: Destination cannot be found for routing/Unable to route transaction
DESCRIPTION: The shopper is using a test card number on living. The shopper should use another payment method.
LAST JOURNAL TYPE: Refused
RAW ACQUIRER RESPONSE: 93: Transaction cannot be completed; violation of law
DESCRIPTION: The issuing bank will not allow this transaction. The shopper should use another payment method.

DESCRIPTION: The issuing bank cannot be contacted. The shopper should retry or use another payment method.
